The open source alternative to Twitter

StatusNet is a microblogging service that aims to be the open source alternative to Twitter. It allows distributed communication between multiple microblogging communities, including Twitter itself. Its API is compatible with Twitter’s, so it can be integrated with the same applications. StatusNet supports hashtags, geolocation, automatic URL-shortening and embedding content from other sites, such as YouTube or Flickr. Users can set up SMS updates and notifications, so they can get updates in real time. StatusNet also works with OpenID authentication.
