Behind every success are metrics that define it. It may be customers or sales or recognition, or something else altogether.

For the custom advertising solutions that Clearcode develops for its clients, the metrics are clear: impressions and click-throughs. So Maciej Zawadzinski, co-founder of Clearcode in Poland, sought a good tool to be able to evaluate the strategies working toward that aim. Google Analytics hardly cut it; Google Urchin wasn't flexible enough. Then Zawadzinski happened upon Piwik.

"I was looking for an analytics solution for a blog advertising network; I was looking for open-source," he says. Piwik was a fit instantly, "so I started to modify it, and made it better."

Today, Zawadzinski and his firm are leading contributors to the Piwik source code, and recently helped release Google2Piwik, which helps companies and end users migrate out of Google Analytics to Piwik.

"We see a trend that more and more people are looking for alternatives to Google Analytics," said Zawadzinski. "I think Piwik is one of the strongest competitiors (and for sure the strongest opensource alternative)." He says that end users are finding a number of reasons to switch to an open source analytics solution including:

  • the need for real-time reporting (Google Analytics has a nearly one day lag, which is too slow for users who need to see how the new article on homepage is performing, for example)
  • the need to own their analytics data (Google Analytics ultimately owns the data for sites it monitors)
  • the need for additional features that can be developed by Piwik consultants, and cannot be added in case of Analytics

While demand is growing for analytics customization, Clearcode is focused largely on designing websites and applications from scratch for their clients, which span the globe, from ReachLocal in the U.S., Reknova in Germany, Elco in Poland and others. The company makes use of other open source software, too, including Magento, which is being expanded and integrated with bookkeeping for one client.

"Most people want to integrate custom reporting into their system and view analytics for their website," says Zawadzinski. Piwik is helping with just that.
